Our history

1892

Maurice Schaerer founds Schaerer Medical AG and develops a line of surgical instruments with Nobel Prize winner Prof. Theodor Kocher.

1912

Schaerer sets a milestone in 1912 with the delivery of one of the world's first mobile operating tables. In close cooperation with Prof. Fritz De Quervain from the Surgical University Clinic in Bern, the table is optimized to such an extent that Schaerer is awarded the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Paris two years later.

1939

Not even the First World War and the Great Depression could hinder the company's rise. In 1939, Schaerer develops two fully equipped surgical vehicles for the army. After the Second World War, Schaerer quickly gained a reputation as a general outfitter of complete operating theaters.

1957

With the Nova X-Ray, Schaerer launches the first operating table with radiolucent table top and central control. The Nova X-Ray is replaced in 1973 by the S-table, the predecessor of the well-known Schaerer Axis 400-800 operating table series.

1993

Schaerer is the first manufacturer to succeed in developing a mobile operating table that is certified for both the European and American markets and is compatible with both power grids. This is the first generation of the Schaerer Axis 400-800 series. The successor products in this series continue to lead the market and set the standard in terms of eccentric column design, weight capacity, quality and durability.

1998

Schaerer relocates its production department to Münsingen. In 2002, all company divisions are brought together at the current production site and company headquarters in Münsingen near Bern.

2001

Schaerer acquires a majority shareholding in Ohio Medical Instruments in the USA, manufacturer of neurosurgical instruments, which are marketed under the world-famous Mayfield brand.

2003-2008

From 2003-2008 the company operates under the brand name Schaerer Mayfield. In 2008, Schaerer is taken over by an investor, successfully restructured and since then operates under the names Schaerer Medical AG and Schaerer Medical USA Inc.

2009

Schaerer launches two groundbreaking innovations on the market: the mobile operating table Schaerer Arcus and the Schaerer MIS Extension System. With a load capacity of up to 500 kg in the standard position and up to 360 kg dynamic load capacity in all positions, the Schaerer Arcus table is especially suitable for bariatric surgery and ideally rounds off the company's existing operating table portfolio. The new extension system sets standards in minimally invasive hip surgery and is developed in close cooperation with Dr. Grob and Prof. Kuster from the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen.

2010

Schaerer Medical AG acquires 100% of Schaerer Mayfield USA, Inc. in Cincinnati, thereby strengthening its position as the world's leading manufacturer of mobile operating tables, medical accessories and specialty products for all surgical disciplines and applications.

2012

Schaerer Medical celebrates the 100th anniversary of its mobile operating tables with numerous events in Switzerland and abroad.

2015
